The Suica cards were basically the cards we used riding the JR trains when we weren't using our JR Rail pass. I had bought a Welcome Suica card at Narita Airport which was slightly different that you couldn't refund it at the end of the trip, so you needed to make sure to use up the entire balance before leaving Japan.
I ended up losing my Welcome Suica card and had to buy a refundable one in Shin-Okubo Station. After using it the entire time we were in Tokyo, I went to turn it in but in order to get refunded the 500 Yen, JR Rail wanted to charge me 220 Yen just to recycle the card anyways! Made no sense! So basically it turned in a 691 Yen souvenir.
